W1YU Echolink Net

For a long time now, the Club has had an informal weekly net that meets on a local West Haven repeater (K1SOX/R - 147.505 down 1, PL 77) and simultaneously on EchoLink, conference NEW-ENG (#9123). See new-eng.com. We meet at 9:15 pm (Eastern prevailing time) on Tuesdays.

All hams are welcome to check in, but we especially encourage Yale-related hams -- alumni, faculty, staff, and students!

We can adjust the schedule to fit people's needs. Let us know your preferences.

Thanks & 73
Martin

Field Day at Yale Field

W1YU activated for ARRL Field Day for the first time in years! The hardy trio comprised Tony Niesz (N1ESZ, club trustee), Martin Ewing (AA6E), and Monty Shepardson (no call yet!). The site was historic Yale Field, the University baseball stadium.

Equipment:
  • Station 1: Kenwood TS520-S transceiver + G5RV antenna (20-15 M SSB), generator power.
  • Station 2: Yaesu FT747GX, battery power + Buddipole antenna (40 M CW)
Thanks to Tom Beckett and Erin Carey, of Yale Athletics, for their support and endulgence!

Scores: We were "competing" for (i.e., expecting) a low score in Class 2A, and we may have achieved it! With a grand total of 32 contacts, we have a claimed score of 68 points. (Our best band was 15 meters.) However, we will have to take bonus points for (1) 100% emergency power use, (2) Operating in a public place, and (3) using the ARRL on-line log submission process. That brings us up to 418 points!

The stations operated for only 3 hours out of the allowed 24, because we did not have enough operators, and because we all had other obligations. Including setup and tear-down time, the Club put in about 25 person-hours to the operation on Saturday, plus more for preparations and ARRL reports.

In future years, we hope to build on this small-scale activity.
